Getting Started with Aikido

New members are always welcome. If you’re interested in training or have any questions, please get in touch or come along to a class.

What to Expect in Class

Aikido classes follow a structure common to most martial arts.

We begin with a short warm-up, followed by exercises that help you learn how to move on the mat (ashi sabaki – footwork) and how to roll and fall safely (ukemi).

The remainder of the class is dedicated to studying selected Aikido techniques that help build a strong foundation in the basics.

Beginner Class Times & Information

  • Mondays: 8:00-9:00pm
    All levels including beginners
  • Tuesdays: 6:15-7:15pm
Aikido Basics for all adults including beginners
  • Sundays: 5:00-6:15pm
Aikido basics for all adults, including beginners and teens and kids 10+ with a parent.

Your First Few Months

We will introduce you to Aikido according to your individual ability, commitment, and goals. In general, you can expect:

  • Weeks 1- 3: Getting comfortable and learning the basics

  • Weeks 4 - 8: Building flow and confidence

  • Weeks 9 - 12: Beginning to recognise techniques

  • Around 3 months: Most people are ready to continue as regular members and can choose from classes held five days a week. This is also when many students are ready for their first grading (6th kyu).

How to Prepare

  • Sign up for a trial class or choose our great-value beginner’s 3-month package, which includes tuition and an outfit.

  • Complete the online waiver form.

  • Arrive 20 minutes before your first class so you can meet the others, chat with the instructor, and have a look around.

  • Wear comfortable clothing. Tracksuit bottoms or leggings and a T-shirt are ideal. Shorts are not recommended, as we spend a lot of time training on our knees. Changing facilities are available at the dojo.

  • Hair should be tied back, and chunky or dangling jewellery removed. We train barefoot.

  • If you have questions about piercings or anything else, please contact Anthea Sensei, who will be happy to advise you.

We look forward to welcoming you to the dojo!
